What is SEO and how is SEO used?

According to Griffin LaFleur, "search engine optimization is the science of improving a website to increase its visibility when people search for products or services. The more visibility a website has on search engines, the more likely it is that brand captures business." LaFleur, G. (2022)

He also goes further to state that "website visibility is commonly measured by the placement -- or ranking -- of the site on search engine results pages (SERPs). And companies always vie for the first page, where they are most likely to garner the most attention." LaFleur, G. (2022)

LaFleur explains that "search engines use bots to crawl all website pages, downloading and storing that information into a collection known as an index. This index is like a library and when someone searches for something in it, the search engine acts as the librarian. The search engine pulls and displays relevant information from the search query and shows users content related to what they were looking for. Search engine algorithms analyze webpages in the index to determine the order those pages should be displayed on the SERP." LaFleur, G. (2022)

Below are some of the uses or importances of SEOs:

  • SEOs drive more traffic to your site. What this means is that the website creator can affect the amount of traffic his site receives. This traffic will be made up of potential customers or clients, who are genuinely interested in the products or services available on the webpage. (Davis, 2006)
  • SEOs cannot make something of nothing, magically. In order to maximize the importance of SEOs it is required that the content of the webpage not only be legitimate (not spam) but also have relevant content. (Davis, 2006)
  • Consciously creating plans, and actively incorporating SEOs into your websites and webpages will guarantee an edge over similar or slightly better websites with none. (Davis, 2006)
