Advantages and Disadvantages of Meta Tags

Like most concepts in the world, and across several fields, anything that has an advantage, has a disadvantage, and vice verca. This is not misplaced in meta tags. This blog post will highlight some of the top advantages and disadvantages of meta tags.

Advantages

  • It's rumored that certain search engines still utilize meta description tags. By including such a tag on each page, it's possible that these pages may have an SEO benefit when indexed by those search engines. However, this has not been conclusively proven and its impact on SEO performance may vary. It is recommended to include relevant and concise meta descriptions for all pages to improve the visibility and click-through rate for users, regardless of the specific search engine used. (Peach 2008)
  • The meta description tag may show up in search results for certain search engines, particularly if it includes the searched keyword. The appearance of the meta description tag varies among search engines, as some may display the tag content together with a snippet from the page, or just the snippet, based on the search query and the search engine used. A well-crafted meta description tag that is displayed in search results can be more effective in drawing in users compared to just a snippet of text from the actual page. (Peach 2008)

Disadvantages

  • In some cases, snippets can be more effective in delivering precisely what the searchers are searching for, compared to a summary of the page. This is especially true if the page has a large amount of content. (Peach 2008)
  • The time allocated towards crafting meta description tags is time taken away from focusing on creating valuable page content, which is of higher priority. (Peach 2008)


One of the most effective ways to overcome these challenges is to make each tag accurate, concise and brief, informing the users of the webpage on what they will find. (Peach 2008)
