Analysis and Comparison of E-Commerce Websites

                                                                                                 Starline (2021)

In our recent updates, we have discussed the meanings, history, and properties of e-commerce websites. We shall however be evaluating the differences and similarities between the homepages of two notable e-commerce websites in this post. Our case studies will be Amazon and Jumia.

  • Headers

Looking at the two pictures above, we can see a noticeable difference in the color schemes and themes/layouts of these e-commerce websites. On the left, the Jumia homepage shows a lighter colour scheme with majorly whites, light blues and oranges, while the Amazon homepage, to the right, has colours picked from both the lighter and darker parts of the color wheel, with colours like white and yellow, and also darker shades of blue and purple.
I find the colour scheme of the Jumia header more aesthetic, because not only does it equally possess features like the search bar and cart, it also has eye-catching ads, having colors that complement the backgrounds on which they lie. The Jumia homepage also contains detailed product categories at a glance. Unlike the Amazon's homepage, Jumia allows for a swift and responsive connection between the homepage and the category page of the product you wish to purchase.

  • Mid-Sections

Fig 3: Jumia        [Jumia (2023)]                                         Fig 4: Amazon        [Amazon (2023)]

Shockingly, despite being a reputable e-commerce website worldwide, the amazon mid-section failed to outline the prices of its products at the homepage. This meant that I had to click on the thumbnails and open each product individually, in order to see the product's price. This is however not the case for Jumia. Not only has it integrated these prices neatly as part of the 'at-a-glance' description of these products, it also shows the price reductions and sale offer values below a number of products, which I find very intuitive.

  • Footers

Fig 5: Jumia        [Jumia (2023)]                                         Fig 6: Amazon        [Amazon (2023)]

The footers of both homepages were very similar. Amazon's footer on their homepage was more detailed, with no icons, however contained all the necessary contents of a webpage's footer. I do still give credit to Jumia for displaying the contents of a good footer, while placing icons and interactive search fields where necessary.

In conclusion, having reviewed both webpages, I am of the opinion that content, as well as the display of said content be considered when designing any website. I would change the amazon's homepage by making it more attractive and responsive. I would also fix the product description issues by adding the prices and discounts (when necessary) in the thumbnail of the products on Amazon's homepage.
